Oranges are juicy citrus fruits packed with Vitamin C!
The Orange is a famous citrus fruit known for its bright color and refreshing taste. Unlike bananas or apples, oranges have a thick, bumpy skin called a rind that you must peel off to get to the juicy parts inside. Once peeled, you find soft sections called segments filled with sweet and tangy juice. Oranges are superstars when it comes to health because they are loaded with Vitamin C, which helps keep you from getting sick!
Oranges are unique because of how they are built:
Oranges are a powerhouse of nutrition:
Oranges grow on evergreen trees, which means the trees stay green all year round! They love warm, sunny weather and are mostly grown in places like Florida, California, Brazil, and Spain.
It takes a long time for an orange tree to grow fruit. A young tree might take 3 to 5 years before it produces its first orange. The flowers on the tree are white and smell incredibly sweet (called orange blossoms). Bees love these flowers, and after they are pollinated, tiny green oranges start to grow. Over many months, they turn from green to bright orange!
Not all oranges are the same! Here are some common types:
