Jupiter is so big that all other planets could fit inside it!
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and is the largest planet in our entire solar system! It is so huge that you could fit all the other planets inside it and still have room to spare. Jupiter is known as a Gas Giant because it is made mostly of hydrogen and helium gas, not rock like Earth. It has colorful stripes, a giant storm called the Great Red Spot, and at least 95 moons! It spins faster than any other planet, making its day only 10 hours long. Let's meet the King of Planets!

💨 What Is a Gas Giant?
Jupiter is not like Earth. You cannot stand on it because it doesn't have a solid surface!
Made of Gas: Jupiter is made mostly of hydrogen and helium, the same gases found in the Sun.
No Ground: As you go deeper into Jupiter, the gas gets thicker and hotter until it turns into a liquid metal ocean. Scientists think there might be a small rocky core deep inside, but no one knows for sure.
Colorful Bands: The stripes you see on Jupiter are clouds of different colors moving at different speeds. The light bands are called "zones" and the dark bands are called "belts."
🌪️ The Great Red Spot: A Giant Storm
Jupiter has a famous feature called the Great Red Spot. It looks like a big red eye on the planet!
Huge Storm: It is a giant storm that has been raging for at least 300 years. It is so big that three Earths could fit inside it!
Wind Speed: The winds in the Great Red Spot blow at over 400 miles per hour (640 km/h). That's much faster than the strongest hurricane on Earth.
Shrinking: Scientists have noticed that the storm is getting smaller over time, but it is still enormous.
🌑 Jupiter's Family of Moons
Jupiter has more moons than any other planet! Scientists have found at least 95 moons orbiting it. Most are tiny rocks, but four are very special. They are called the Galilean Moons because Galileo Galilei discovered them in 1610:
Ganymede: The largest moon in the entire solar system! It is even bigger than the planet Mercury. It has its own magnetic field.
Callisto: Covered in craters, it is one of the oldest surfaces in the solar system.
Io: The most volcanic object in the solar system! It has hundreds of active volcanoes that shoot lava high into space.
Europa: Covered in smooth ice. Scientists think there might be a huge ocean of liquid water underneath the ice where life could exist!
🏎️ Fast Spin and Faint Rings
Jupiter is a speed demon:
Fastest Day: Jupiter spins around once every 10 hours. That means a day on Jupiter is less than half as long as a day on Earth! Because it spins so fast, it bulges out at the middle, making it look slightly squashed.
Faint Rings: Everyone knows Saturn has rings, but did you know Jupiter has rings too? They are very thin and dark, made of dust from meteor impacts on its moons. You need a powerful telescope to see them.
🚀 Amazing Jupiter Facts
King Name: Jupiter is named after the king of the Roman gods. In Greek mythology, his name is Zeus.
Protector: Jupiter's huge gravity acts like a vacuum cleaner, pulling in comets and asteroids that might otherwise hit Earth. It helps protect us!
Lightning: Jupiter has lightning bolts that are 1,000 times stronger than those on Earth.
Auroras: Jupiter has permanent auroras (Northern Lights) at its poles that are much brighter and bigger than Earth's.
Failed Star: Jupiter is so big that some scientists call it a "failed star." If it were about 80 times bigger, it would have become a star itself!
Gravity: If you could stand on Jupiter (you can't!), you would weigh more than twice what you weigh on Earth.
🛰️ Visiting Jupiter
Several spacecraft have visited Jupiter to study this giant:
Pioneer & Voyager (1970s):** These were the first probes to fly by Jupiter. They sent back the first close-up pictures of the clouds and the Great Red Spot.
Galileo (1995-2003):** This spacecraft orbited Jupiter for 8 years and even dropped a probe into the atmosphere to measure the gases.
Juno (2016-Present):** Currently orbiting Jupiter, studying its interior, gravity field, and magnetic field. It has taken amazing photos of the poles.
Future Missions: NASA is planning the Europa Clipper mission to study Jupiter's moon Europa and see if it could support life.
